SILK GAUZE

Silk gauze is exceptionally lightweight, airy, and open in structure, silk gauze creates translucency with very little visual weight. Sylvie Silk offers 3.5 momme silk gauze in 36″, 45″, and 54″ widths for layering, delicate garments, accessories, overlays, and experimental textile applications.

What Is Silk Gauze?

Silk gauze is an extremely lightweight silk fabric characterized by an open, breathable-looking structure and pronounced transparency. Its sparse construction allows light and underlying materials to remain visible while still providing the distinctive hand and character of silk.

At only 3.5 momme, this is the lightest fabrication in the Sylvie Silk range covered by these pages.

Working With Silk Gauze

Because silk gauze is exceptionally lightweight and open, it requires especially gentle handling.

Avoid pulling or stretching the fabric during cutting and sewing. Use fine needles and thread, test all stitches first, and plan seam finishes carefully so they do not overpower the fabric.

Sharp jewelry, rough surfaces, and unfinished equipment edges can easily catch an open silk structure.

Caring for Silk Gauze

  • Handle with particular care.
  • Spot clean whenever practical.
  • If washing is appropriate, use cold water and a mild silk detergent.
  • Avoid prolonged soaking.
  • Do not rub, scrub, twist, or wring.
  • Support the fabric fully while wet.
  • Blot gently with a clean towel.
  • Lay flat to dry away from direct sunlight and heat.

  • Press only when necessary using very low heat and a pressing cloth.
  • Store away from rough or sharp objects.
